For the ancient Irish, the dead did not simply go away. They could, if they so desired, come back to interact with the living in various ways. They could come back in order to warn, advise, admonish or convey secrets to the living or to fulfill tasks which they had left uncompleted in life. And those who did return to the world of the living were not always the insubstantial phantoms of the Victorian imagination. Rather they were corporeal figures who could make their presence felt in actual and substantial ways.

Grainne Daly is the story of a desperate, unmarried girl, anxious to make a life for herself and her mother, and the shadowy evil of the stranger who comes to their door asking for her hand in wedlock.
